Bedknobs and Broomsticks in a Snowstorm

One of my Christmas gifts this year was a generous Barnes and Noble gift card from my Dad. I used it to buy "Some Like It Hot", "A Night at the Opera" and "Bedknobs and Broomsticks". While I work on polishing up my thesis (a nonfiction book of essays) before it enters the committee process officially tomorrow, I thought I could use some of the good vibes and happy tears that always come with a viewing of this live-action Disney classic. The soundtrack alone is enough to fill you with joy and take you all the way back to childhood. I love all the songs, but there's always one song on this soundtrack that gets me crying, happy tears of course, but it always sneaks up on me when "The Soldiers of the Old Home Guard" comes up in the first ten minutes. I love it so much, maybe because it reminds me of my Dad, a veteran of the Marines, maybe just because the song is so well written. No matter what the reason, this movie always gets me in the emotional core, which is where I need to be to finish this book. It's a movie all about "the age of not believing" and the power of imagination and goodness and child-like joy, and I hope that's what I can say my book will be about too. May the song inspire you as much as it inspires me. Enjoy the snowstorm and keep chugging away on whatever project you've got going...after all, it's a step in the right direction.

Old Home Guard

They’re sailing for England
Oh! What a shame!
Someone is after our island again
We’ll let them have it…
Oh, yes we will!
But maybe they won’t want it when they get the bill!
For we wrote the stories of the old brigades
We know the glory of yesterday’s parades
We’re celebrating yard by yard
The soldiers of the old home guard!
We Will!
The soldiers of the old home guard!

Call out the navy, call out the ranks
Call out the air force, call out the tanks.
From the cliffs of Dover call up the gulls
And don’t forget the loyal territorials!

But, who’s sticking in here? Who will defend
every inch of England no matter what they send?
Who’s standing firm in our own front yard?
The soldiers of the old home guard
That’s Who!
The soldiers of the old home guard

For we wrote the stories of the old brigades
We know the glory of yesterday’s parades
Who’s standing firm in our own front yard?
The soldiers of the old home guard
That’s Who!
The soldiers of the old home guard
